Looking for more happiness in how you live? Try this.

Have you noticed that negativity appears to be nearly inescapable in todays world?  The moment you open social media, you’re bombarded with political “debates” and hatred from one group or person to another and the media eats it up.  The same media that only seems to report the bad things that are happening in the world around us.  But where’s all the good that’s out there?  We know it exists but why does it seem so rare to see positivity and happiness in today’s world?  I find the answer in a lesson my great grandfather taught my father decades ago…

“If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.”

This was my great grandfathers way of telling my father that if you don’t make necessary changes in life you can always expect the same result.  And if you are tired of the same result you must take action to create something new.

In today’s world, it’s no secret that negativity comes easier to us due to the environment in which we live in. Why wouldn’t it?  Most of us don’t have control over what the media decides to broadcast or what others share on social media but we also fail to break the chain of negativity. We keep watching the news and scrolling through social media or talking to the people who bring more negativity into our lives. We comment on content on social media we disagree with instead of letting it roll by so we can focus on the stuff that brings us happiness.  We CHOOSE to engage with the negativity.

“If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.”

We follow what everyone else does and wonder why we get the same results.  We see that others complain about their jobs or painful relationships so we do the same.  We see that our friends are arguing over Facebook so we chime in.  We engage with what is available to us without realizing that we are throwing gasoline on the fire of negativity and watching it spread.

If we fail to make changes in our own lives then we can expect that same result – positivity will remain a rare commodity because we CHOOSE to make negativity more accessible.

I’ve written about this before but the time has come for change.  It’s time to change where the spotlight shines in our lives.  We need to change what we choose to focus on and what we let affect out daily lives.  We need to change the people we spend time with if they are holding us back from being happy.  We need to change the content we share and interact with on social media if it pulls us away from positivity and we need to change the station when the media shares more hatred so we can break the cycle of negativity.

But it starts with you – you can’t wait for others to take action.  If you want to find more happiness in life than start making changes on step at a time.  I promise it will spread like wildfire.  The moment you shift your focus towards seeking out positivity you will notice a huge increase in the happiness you find in your daily life and in the lives of those around you.

I challenge you to be the change this world desperately needs and to be the light in a world that is so often dark.
