What is Success?

Most of us are willing to spend our entire lives chasing personal success, but how do we know what to chase unless we can define what success means to us?  According to my Google search, I found three basic definitions of success:

  1. the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.
  2. the attainment of popularity or profit.
  3. a person or thing that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity.

Which definitions fits your idea of success? If we pick option #1, the accomplishment of an aim or purpose, we must be more specific with what our aim is.  In my opinion, our society pulls us towards door #2, the attainment of popularity of profit.  The societal expectation seems to be the pursuit of what the world around us wants us to have; fame, fortune and prestige.  What caught my eye in option #3 is that it is continuous, which I interpreted as success having the potential to be recurring.

What do you define success as?  What does a successful life look like for you?  Everyone is different and that’s ok.

To some people, living in a mansion and driving a Lamborghini is success.  To others, living a simple life with only the essentials is success.  How can that be?  How can success look so different between two people?

If success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose, then we must identify what aim our purpose we set out to accomplish in the first place.  Success to me is my personal completion of what I set out to accomplish, not what anybody else wanted for me.  Does your personal success require the attainment of popularity or profit in some capacity?  Does it require approval from anyone else?  Only you can answer that.  Only you can identify the value others hold in your definition of success.  When you chase your personal success, take a moment to ask yourself what you are chasing and why.  Why do you want what you want?  Is it what you want for yourself or what someone wants for you?  Are you chasing it for the right reasons?

Life doesn’t have to be as complicated as we make it out to be.  Spend some time asking yourself what success means to you.  Be confident in your answer and pursue what it will take to get you there.  Be resilient.  Be authentic.  And most importantly, remember that success is nothing without people to share it with.
