The Kelsey Rose Playlist

In a few hours I will I marry the woman of my dreams.  Honestly, I can’t believe it.  I never thought it was possible to love someone the way I love her.  But it hasn’t always been easy.

The long distance relationship with Kelsey Rose was no walk in the park.  Three and a half years we spent apart, nearly half of our relationship so far, and two of those years we spent separated by an ocean.  It was beyond difficult but if you asked me how we did it, my answer would be pretty straight forward, “We wanted to.”

Believe it or not, sometimes life is that simple.  If you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it work.  I wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with her and I made the choice to put in the work necessary to make that dream a reality.  Wanting something isn’t enough to make it happen, you have to work for it.  It won’t fall into your lap just because you want it to, and my relationship with Kelsey Rose is a perfect example of that.  It requires the ability to adapt, extreme dedication and undaunting passion.

The circumstances we find ourselves in suck sometimes.  I wanted to be a soldier but it sucked to be so far from her and my home.  God has a way of challenging our faith and dedication in our pursuit of what our heart truly wants.  We are often inclined to feel sorry for ourselves and the situation we find ourselves in because it’s easier than working to find a way to adapt and to make it work.

We went months on end without talking or her knowing where I was.  The only reason we made it though was because we wanted to bad enough.  We found a way.  My sights were set on the end goal and I refused to let it slip away and honestly, I owe it all to a shitty iPod.

Every night, in every country, I fell asleep with two things in my hand; a rosary my Aunt Lulu gave me, and my iPod with my Kelsey Rose playlist on repeat.

It was full of about 50 songs that reminded me of her.  Even on the toughest days, those songs made me feel invincible again.  It made me feel closer to her and it gave me strength beyond measure.

Why am I telling you this?  Because sometimes we want something so badly in life that we do everything in our power to make it work, but life still stacks the odds against us.  Don’t quit.  We all experience hardship and obstacles to overcome, and we need something or someone we can turn to for strength when we need it most.

Life isn’t supposed to be easy.  Sometimes God tests our resiliency and dedication on the path we choose to take.  The Kelsey Rose playlist has gotten me through some of the toughest times of my life and brought my happiness in the moments that I never thought possible.

Years later, I still listen to the same playlist every day.  As I hear new songs that remind me of her, I add them to the list.  When people ask me how I can listen to the same songs over and over again, my answer remains simple.  I want to.  They make me happy and they bring me peace. They have helped us get to where we are and today those same songs will play at our wedding.

Kelsey Rose, I love you more than words will ever begin to describe.  One day at a time, we will change the world.  I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.

Cheers to you my love.
