Work Backwards

In order to grow, we must identify what growth we are looking for.  What is it that inspires us?  What are we looking to achieve throughout our lifetime?  That’s a hard question to answer, right? The sixth principle of TRUE G.R.O.W.T.H.  requires us to pour our heart and soul into everything we do, but that can be difficult without the sense of fulfilment that is associated with personal purpose.

Let’s try a new way to look for this answer.  Instead of looking for our purpose in the near future, expand your search to a longer time horizon.  On the day you die, what do you want to be remembered for?  Remember, it’s not about where you go in life, but more importantly, the type of person you are when you get there.

Work backwards.  What is the end goal we hope to achieve throughout our lifetime?  Whether our life ends tomorrow or in 70 years, what do we want to be remembered for?  Motivation is a powerful tool but for us to truly realize its strength, we must give it a purpose.  We must give our lives purpose.

If we seek that sense of fulfillment, we must work backwards.  Once we have identified our purpose, it becomes that much easier to become passionate about life and what we spend our time doing.  Forget money, fame and fortune for a moment.  What sets your soul on fire?  What do you want your legacy to be?  My father always told me, “Be passionate and love what you do, the rest will come with time.”

Finding our purpose is one of the hardest parts of life, but working backwards gives us a place to start.  We all want different things out of life.  You probably won’t be able to identify your life’s purpose by the time you’re done reading this post.  Spend some time reflecting on what you want your life to mean.  This took me years to find this answer but don’t let that scare you.  Be passionate about everything you do and never let fear hold you back from following your heart.

On the day I die, I pray that someone remembers me for how I impacted their life.  I could care less how much money I made or what cars I drove.  I want to change the world and that’s my purpose and writing is one of my methods.  I want to leave the world in a better place than it was when I got here, and everyday I will work towards fulfilling that goal.
