When I hear people refer to “the 1%” I don’t think of the upper socioeconomic class. I also don’t think of the 1% of the population who has served in the military. When I hear the 1% I think of the people who live their life for no reason other than to make the world a greater place than it was yesterday. Who wake up everyday to make a lasting impact on each person they encounter. Mother Teresa so bravely said “We can do no great things – only small things with great love.” This couldn’t be more true for the 1%-ers I am referring to.
To push your own interest to the side for the benefit of something greater is true sacrifice. To pursue a greater world may even cost you your own personal glory. To become a pillar that this world couldn’t stand without is a true life calling. That is why I believe that only 1% of our population lives their life with no purpose other than to change the world.
But I will bet my life savings that the true key to success is in fact living a life for the betterment of others.
It doesn’t matter what we accomplish on our own. It doesn’t matter how much wealth we can accrue if it’s done for our own personal gain. It doesn’t matter what we have built for ourselves if it doesn’t leave the world in a better place than it was before we got here. On the day I die, I want to be able to look back at the world and smile knowing that I have left my mark.
However, the hardest challenge for these 1%-ers is that people will still try to bring you down. When you don’t live your life in conjunction with societal expectations, the world seems to have a gravitational pull against you. The pressure to conform becomes overwhelming. Once again, that is why only 1% make it through.
It takes a special type of heart to swim against the current. It takes a special person to face society head on with confidence in your cause.
It’s not for everyone, and only you can decide if it’s the life for you…
