In my pursuit for happiness I have often found myself blinded by life in the 21st century. The glimmer of advances in technology, the growth of social media, and the pursuit of financial freedom had tempted me to shift my focus. I have to ask myself every day what I am willing give up in pursuit of the life I seek. Technology has brought the world to my fingertips and the difficulty lies in choosing what to do with those opportunities.
For those of you familiar with economics, you have likely heard the term opportunity cost(s). The term refers to what we give up with every choice we make. For example, every hour you choose to spend at work is an hour you give up at home, relaxing. For every hour you choose to watch t.v. is an hour you have chosen not to chase your dreams. Better yet, every second you choose to be the “new you” is a choice to leave the old you behind.
To be clear, my intention through this post is not to tell you to eliminate your leisure activities. In fact, they are essential in keeping us focused. What I do hope, is to remind you of something obvious. To remind you that there are 24 hours in a day. That’s 1440 minutes or 86,400 seconds. What you choose to do with that time is what defines you. Life is filled with choices, every second of every day and each choice comes with a cost.
Life is about identifying who you want to be, what you want to accomplish, and who you want by your side every step of the way. Those all require choices. Often very difficult choices, but choices that define us. The first being is what you do with your time. The second is what are you willing to give up to pursuit of the life of your dreams and third, when are you willing to start?
When you have identified who you want to be and what legacy you want to imprint on this world, those choices become easier. You begin to make choices that propel you forward on your journey. Life is a choice. Your choice, to become everything you have ever imagined and that starts today!
